Hollywood Teen Council presents Teen Picks. Books, Movies, Music, Etc.

Posted on Friday October 29, 2010 by Hollywood

Each link will take you right into the library catalog so you can place holds on what you're interested in.

In the Time of the Butterflies

Alvarez, Julia

FICTION ALVAREZ 2010

Meet the Mirabal sisters - Patira, Minerva, Maria, Teresa, and Dede, - extraordinary girls who sacrifice the lives they know in the name of justice and freedom, in this historically based, whimsically-written tale that will have you laughing and crying.

Forest of Hands and Teeth

Ryan, Carrie

y RYAN 2009

Mary lives in a village surrounded by the 'Unconsecrated' or the hoard of the undead who have terrorized the small village for years before anyone can remember. Mary dreams of the world outside her village and the hope for land far away from the Unconsecrated. This chilling zombie apocalypse story will keep you turning pages all the way through.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Schaffer, Mary & Barrows, Annie

FICTION SCHAFFER

Set in the emotional rebuilding years after WWII in the isle of Guernsey in the British Channel, this historical novel is a beautifully poignant compilation of letters that is well worth the read.

An Abundance of Katherines

Green, John

y GREEN

Dumped by 19 girls named Katherine, child prodigy Colin Singleton and his best friend take a heart-healing road trip where Colin hopes to prove mathematically that relationships are predictable and earn his way into adulthood as a certified genius.

Catalyst

Anderson, Laurie Halse

y ANDERSON

Kate Malone's life is full of twists and turns, from her stress about getting accepted to Harvard, to the troubles of her friends and family. Journey along with her in this skillfully relatable novel as she discovers that she is only human, fraught with insecurities, doubts, and questions - and that's okay.

Running with Scissors

Burroughs, Augustine

B-Bu944r 2002b

Augustine Burroughs tells the story of his uncanny childhood growing up the child of a delusional poet, who gave him up to her unorthodox psychoanalyst. Augustine finds himself amidst a bizarre family where everyday threatens his sanity...

As Simple as Snow

Galloway, Gregory

FICTION GALLOWAY

Some mysteries are better left unsolved, as is with the case of missing Anna who preferred to be called Anastasia and spent her time writing obituaries. She was an enigma alive, but proves to be even more of one dead, as packages, songs and clues lead the reader to uncover the cryptic conclusion.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Adams, Douglas

SF ADAMS

As you open the cover of this absurdist masterpiece, prepare yourself for a hilarious, nonsensical journey in which you'll discover the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Sequel: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

Everybody into the Pool

Lisick, Beth

B-Li6868e 2005

In this culture-rich paradox of a memoir, Beth Lisick takes us through her unpredictable and humorous California life as homecoming princess to alterna-mom as she tries to figure out what went wrong that made her who she is.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Safron Foer, Jonathan

FICTION FOER

Nine year old Oskar Schell, grieving over his father's death in the 9/11 attacks, copes the only way he can... searching for a mystery. Oskar searches New York looking for the key behind his father's death along the way meeting an assortment of new friendships.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Grahame-Smith, Seth

FICTION GRAHAMESM 2009

In this hilarious mash-up, meet the Bennet sisters like you've never seen them before! Now with a zombie plague on the rise in the town of Meryton, the sisters must battle the undead while attempting to manage marriage proposals and English Tea.

Breakfast of Champions

Vonnegut, Kurt

FICTION VONNEGUT 2006

This novel focuses on the story of one of Vonnegut's commonly used characters, a poor sci-fi novelist named Kilgore Trout, and how he drove a man insane. This satire filled novel will have you laughing so hard you won't be able to turn the page.

Please Don't Kill the Freshman

Trope, Zoe

y 305.235 T856p 2003

This memoir reveals the truth about high school through the brutally honest words of Zoe Trope. Written by a teen for teens in poetic and contemporary style, you'll laugh and cry as you join Zoe on her quest for adulthood and freedom for the school she calls hell.

Cat's Cradle

Vonnegut, Kurt

FICTION VONNEGUT 2006

A book full of lies, this novel gives an enjoyable satire on both religion and the doom that our technology will inevitably bring. Prepare yourself for a religious experience that stops only as the world comes to an end.

Night

Wiesel, Elie

940.5318 W6497n 2006

A holocaust survivor, Wiesel gives his recounting of the horrific hardships he endured as the Germans transferred him about from concentration camp to concentration camp. An absolute classic, yet still enjoyable read, this book should be first on your list.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Coleridge, Samuel Taylor

821.7 C693r 1970

A classic epic poem with beautiful lyricism and poignant imagery, this tale is an essential for those interested in the art of literature and poetry. “Water, water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink. Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink.”

I Am America (and So Can You!)

Colbert, Steven

818.6 C684i 2007

A hilarious satire on Republican extremism composed by comedian Steven Colbert. Indulging rants about things that are wrong with the country, and Colbert’s “knee jerk beliefs” on everything from the liberal media to environmentalists express the absurdly misguided persona of personified Republican America.

Stop me if you've heard this one before

Yoo, David

y YOO 2008

This is a modern book with a Romeo and Juliet twist. Albert Kim is a loner at school until he hangs out with the most popular girl over the summer. Can they hang out together during the craziest school year ever? Or are they destined to be apart?

Media

Good bye Lenin!

Arndt, Stefen

DVD Foreign GOOD

Alex Kerner knows his mother would be shocked into another coma if she were to know the Berlin wall fell and capitalism was restored. In this entertaining German film, Alex goes to great lengths to protect his mother from the truth as he creates the illusion that the German Democratic Republic was left unchanged.

Hang On Little Tomato

Pink Martini

CD Popular PINK

The sophomore album of Portland world music/jazz group Pink Martini featuring songs both toe-tappingly upbeat and enchanting & slow. Lead singer China Forbes's hauntingly beautiful voice, pianist Thomas Lauderdale's extraordinary playing, and the addition of the large variety of instrumentalists form an unforgettable combination.

The Fury of Our Maker's Hand

DevilDriver

CD Popular DEVILDRIV

The groups second album, DevilDriver really falls into their groove with this release. Still perhaps their greatest release to date, this album contains songs that will continue to define the group throughout its existence. The library's special edition copy also contains a live DVD of DevilDriver performing some of their best songs.

Everything is Illuminated

This charming movie set in Ukraine will take you on the most enjoyable yet heart-wrenching emotional rollercoaster of the summer.

Zeitgeist

Joseph, Peter

DVD 364.1 ZEITGEIST

A movie that details the origins of Christianity, the events of 9/11, and the economic influence of the Federal Reserve, this movie is an absolute must-see for anyone who wants to understand the world they're living in. This will be by far one of the best documentaries you've ever seen, perhaps only to be surpassed by its sequel Zeitgeist II: Addendum.

Poem: Want to End it All by Ingrid

Posted on Thursday March 04, 2010 by Sara Ryan

Want to end it all

Sometimes you feel like this,

you want to end it all, you

feel so small among them all

with your soul oppressed by

the world so cruel, * you

wont open your eyes, cuz you

dont want to see what is left

for you, you look so scared

but not surprised seems as

they have always been the

owners of you life

Your hopes were all gone,

feel the death has a place in

your home, seems i have been

so far from you those days,

but you were always far from

me,and as look you around you

you will see everyone has

gone , you are all alone now,

searching for a home to cry

out your pain

But who can hear you, who can

heal you,  even if your far i

am always near you

searching for a new

beginning, searching for a

new home, searching for a new

home, or simply a place where

i must belong, just dont want

to end it all

When I think of You

Posted on Friday August 07, 2009 by St. Johns

When I think of you
I see your face smiling down at me
But then I realize
You're not there

Every night I dream of you
Not noticing the tears falling down my face
My eyes filled with these memories of you
And all the things we use to do

Whever I think of you
I remember the good time we had
And then I realize that you're gone
I begin feeling sad

I don't know anymore
I miss you so much
It's hard to think straight anymo
re
The pain still withers in my heart

And as the world still turns
My soul stands alone
For the first time
In my life

When I think of you
I see the brightness in your eyes
They don't diseave me
When under the moonlight
When I think of you

By Adelle Bleumoon aka Samantha T. Moore of St. Johns Library.
