Have you finished the book? Want to talk about it?

I get wretchedly motion-sick on buses. I try to find anything to stare at and keep my mind busy as the vehicle bobs and sways along. Last week, while scanning the bus to find anything to grab my attention, a girl pulls A Long Way Gone from her purse and starts reading it!

I really wanted to talk to her about the book, but alas, she was four rows away from me and the bus was packed.

Does this resonate with you? Have you read the book and have a lot you want to say, but no one to discuss it with? If so, you should check out one of the many book groups we are holding! They're happening all over town, so check out the schedule!

I believe the idea of the book was to enlighten the public as to the conditions in African warring countries, and to take us out of our safe, comfortable, well fed lives. I have read some of the controversary and don't particularly care if it is absolutely accurate; the message is still the same. The anguish that children must feel when their entire families are gone, whether dead or displaced, leaves a sickness in my heart. The time Ishmeal spent in the forest, lost and unable to find his way out, would make even the most stable adult panic with fear. It is no wonder that the children felt better as a soldier. At least there was companionship. They were not alone. The horrors were shared. I hope this book makes its way into high schools. Controversial, yes, but this is their world and they should know what happens when governments fail. They should try to make a difference in the future, as should we all. I loved the book and read it in one sitting.
