Join us this Sunday!

The Hollywood branch is hosting a book group this Sunday featuring Evelyne Ello-Hart, President of the African Womens Coalition.  Come and hear her and members of the African youth community share their life experiences and thoughts on the book. 

 Also coming up this week is a book group hosted by one of our partnering coffee shops.  If you are in the north/northeast Portland area, Goldrush Coffee shop (located on the corner of Russell and MLK) will be hosting a book group on Monday at 7pm. 

Mercy Corps invites you to their headquarters at 3030 SW First Ave to listen and discuss current improvements in nine countries across Africa.  They will be speaking on the fight against famine, HIV/AIDS, and economic improvements.   This event is held on Tuesday, February 12, at 11am and 6:30 pm.

I attended the morning Mercy Corps program and just wanted to say how excellent it was. The panelists talked about what it is like to go into a developing country which is going through transition and work side by side with the local people on programs ranging from health care to agriculture to business and industry. There was also a segment on ways to get involved; for example local musician Stephanie Schneiderman talked about a concert series she organized to fundraise for Mercy Corps Africa programs. What was most striking was how she never considered herself an activist per se, but how as she worked on the project she became so involved that it grew to become a concert series that raised close to $60K! Mercy Corps also stressed how activisim can be on many levels, both big and small and how everyone can play a role in making a global impact.
