What We're Reading Now

Jane is reading The Food of a Younger Land, edited by Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky picks up the baton of the dropped WPA project "America Eats", pulling together the submissions of recipes, anecdotes and photos from all across America in the 30s to early 40s. It's an amazing eye-opener of how quickly things have changed in our world!

Jane coordinates classes and training for staff and patrons.

That looks interesting. I bet those recipes have a lot more butter, fat and lard than today's! Like so many people, I saw "Julie and Julia" and am awaiting the Julia Child cookbook from my own library. Of course, it's back on the best-seller list, all because of the movie!

I just picked up a Joy Fielding and Faye Kellerman from the library last night. But what I'm reading now is non-fiction, a memoir of life during WWII, "Abandoned and Forgotten," (www.abandonedandforgotten.com) by Evelyne Tannehill, who lived the horror of being forced from her home and orphaned. It's her tale of survival, and her illuminating a little known part of the war. It stresses what war does to people and how it impacts the innocent civilian population. Very moving and powerful.
