Project Ideas from Spring '09 Teen Council Retreat

Posted on Wednesday May 20, 2009 by Sara Ryan

Representatives from seven teen councils came to the retreat last Saturday!

Here is a (dark and blurry, sorry) photo of our very cool guest speaker Kevin Carroll talking to everyone:

One activity we did was to have each person write down an idea for something they'd like teen councils to do in the future. Here are your ideas:

  • A project for middle school to high school students to give them suggestions for books that they may need for school or to help improve their reading
  • Help little kids with school things like reading, math, etc.
  • Tutoring kids who struggle at reading
  • Book drive for kids who don't have books
  • Mind games, more activities
  • Investigating a crime but using books, like who stole a book
  • We should have a summer retreat where we can make our own smoothies!
  • I would like to have a carnival type of event for little kids.
  • Clean up around the library and publicize the fact that we need to not litter.
  • Some sort of large reading celebration at Central Library
  • Outdoor activities: tag, water fights, 2 hand touch football etc.
  • Go iceskating (2 people!)
  • Go to Oaks Park
  • Going on field trips
  • Papier-maché sculptures
  • Book club
  • Water fight (balloons, water guns, etc.) in the park. Ice cream afterwards. :)
  • Teen Council recruiting video or music video
  • Go to Ka-Nee-Ta
  • Learn more icebreakers
What do you think about these? Discuss them at your next meeting and/or respond in comments!

Teen Council Retreat=Awesome!

Posted on Tuesday May 13, 2008 by Sara Ryan

Hey everybody -- So glad so many of you were able to make it to the Teen Council Retreat on May 3rd! For those of you who couldn't come, don't worry, we'll definitely be doing this again. And we still have some t-shirts left (L and XL) so let your friendly librarian know if you need one.

The most popular ideas that came out of the retreat:

  • Doing skits about the library for younger kids (Connect to Portland Parks and Recreation?)
  • Multimedia presentation about libraries for younger kids
  • Podcasting
  • Hip-hop classes, including breakdancing -- If you know a good teacher for these, tell me who they are in the comments!
  • Field Day (Jelly Beans, Musical Chairs, Pictionary) -- Someone will have to explain the 'jelly beans' part to me
  • Trips: rollerskating, mini golf, go-carts, Ground Kontrol, bowling

Annica Stivers took some fabulous photos -- here are a couple:

And here's the "Books" video that debuted at the retreat!

Twice upon a time

Posted on Friday February 15, 2008 by Dawlish the Auror

The evil bunny rabbit, whose name was not Sqwakers, but actually Gregor Phillip III, was sitting at a teen council meeting, as a man with one shoe walked by.  The man with one shoe then got eaten by a giant spaceworm made out of Cheetos with a tapioca posion pudding stomach.  The man with one shoe was tasty, but gave the worm inmdigestion.

Then Gregor got attacked by a crazy woman who grabbed his head and started rocking it from side to side.  She then gave Gregor 300 dollars.  Gregor spent the money on a brand new llama.  In fact, 6 llamas.  As Gregor was riding his llamas, the man with one shoe popped out of a hole in the ground.  This was surprising, since he was dead.  Very dead.  Then a cookie fell on him.  A pomegranate cookie.

Just then, Hedwig flew in unexpectantly.  Gregor watched Hedwig (who was NOT dead) fly by, and was suddenly able to use magic.  He then cast the greatest spell of all time: "EXPECTO PATRONUN!"  Suddenly, an army of glowing, floating nuns appeared, and they kicked Gregor in the spleen.  Gregor died.

Then the world exploded.  Everyone died.  EVERYONE.  Including Arthur and his friends.  EVERYONE.  Even Joe Normal and his buddies.  Absolutely everyone.

To be continued....

Offical Teen Council Post

Posted on Friday February 15, 2008 by Fantasyfreak

This is the first offical post of Team Pomegranate. We are sorry for not posting any records of our meetings. This month we talked about our idea of a writing contest and the Free Comic Book Day programs. And we are considering a slumber party here. Anyway about the writing contest, we are probably going to include the whole library county. Prizes such as a Nintendo DS Lite (Nintendo Dual Screen Lite) or a bookstore gift card for multiple stores. This contest will be run later this year. Honorable mentions will get an amount of fines reduced from their account.

This is Fantasyfreak signing off

Say Cheese!

Posted on Saturday January 12, 2008 by Ivy Chen

Hello All!

The Midland Counsel of Teens had a potluck on the 12th of December, just before Christmas. Each member brought mouth watering dishes to share and all of us had a great time participating in super fun activities! The following are pictures of our fun and somewhat crazy Christmas party : p

Group picture of all the teen council members

From left to right: top row -- Vu, Linda, Ka Chun, Ivy, Harry, Katie, and Ann

bottom row -- Michael, Anne (the teen librarian), Ngoc and Ken

We are all from David Douglas High School, except Harry and Anne lol!

Finishing up the last bites before leaving the library and go our separate ways lol!

That's all the pictures we've taken! Hope you enjoyed them :)

HSASH ( Help Shelter Animals Stay Happy )

Posted on Wednesday January 09, 2008 by Arianne Christine Melton

HSASH is a program that I run with the help of my family and my friend Cassie. I started last year when I was at elementary school (Hollydale) . This year since Cassie and I are on the teen council at Gresham Branch we added a drive drop off in the Gresham Library's lobby. We also had a drop at Hollydale run by the Vice President, my brother. Our drive ran from November 14- December 20. As you see it recently ended.

On December 22 we brought in our donations to the Multnomah County Animal Shelter. We ended up having 131 items from Hollydale, and 206 items from the library. When we got there they were thrilled from the large donation. It took three shopping carts to bring it into the building. The last shopping cart, which was all cans, took three people to push it in.

We happily trippled last years earnings , and next year we hope to do even better. We enjoy helping the stray animals, and knowing they will eat better for a long time on our acount. Thank you to anyone who contributed, we could not do it without you.

Introducing... DAWLISH THE AUROR!

Posted on Wednesday December 19, 2007 by Dawlish the Auror

Hello!   My name is Dawlish, Dawlish the Auror.  I  am a member of Team Pomegranate, the best darn fruit-based Library Council ever!  Hopefully, you should be seeing more of Team Pomegranate (headquartered at the Hollywood library) on here soon.

Here's a quick list of planned activities:

Work day for Summer Reading Game Boards

Writing Competition

NDAD Celebration (National Dawlish Appreciation Day)

Slumber Party

Military Re-enactments (i.e. The Battle Of Hogwarts, The Siege of Minas Tirith, etc.)

Some of those are actually real!

You know what the really cool thing about this is?  I can talk about whatever I want.  I could ramble on about my lint collection, or the time I almost died twice in the same week.

Oh, yeah, you should all go to Free Rice.  It is an awesome website, consisting of building your vocabulary, and raising food for those in need.

Read and Rock Out!

4th Midland Teen Council Meeting

Posted on Wednesday December 05, 2007 by Katie Ham

Hello again!

Time to introduce a few more members, Ann and Ngoc, who are both juniors at David Douglas High School. We're glad to have more people joining! It's getting to be a good size, especially since we started with 3 members! ^_^

We started out with the branch manager Javier coming to meet us. He introduced himself and talked a little bit about upcoming events, which was interesting. We have the MTC fliers and we'll be putting them up around DDHS. We ran over some information for the teen gameboard designs, so don't forget to bring them next meeting!

The Anime Screening Club is on February 26th from 3:30-5:30 PM. We're also trying to book a local band for the end-of-the-school-year-ish time. The Lunar New Year celebration is going to be on February 17th from 1-5 PM, and we hope to see you there! The MTC group photo is on December 19th, as is our "holiday" potluck, so dress nicely, bring food, and don't spill! (<-Wow... that was cheesy... sorry!) We're working on getting our movie night set up on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, but we're not quite sure yet.

Here are the assignments for fliers that we discussed at the meeting, just in case you forget:

Katie and Ivy - Movie Night and DDR Fliers
Linda - Boardgames Fliers
Vu - Guitar Hero Fliers
Ngoc and Ann - Anime Club Fliers

There's that!

And here's a calendar for upcoming events...

Bamboo Candlesticks - Dec. 15th from 3-5 PM
Dance Dance Revolution - Jan. 15th from 3:30-5:30 PM
Board Games - Jan. 22nd from 3:30-5:30 PM
Guitar Hero - Feb. 12th from 3:30-5:30 PM
Board Games - Feb. 19th from 3:30-5:30 PM
Anime Screening Club - Feb. 26th from 3:30-5:30 PM

...so there's that!

Thanks for reading,

Katie.

3rd Midland Teen Council Meeting

Posted on Sunday November 25, 2007 by Katie Ham

Hello!

So, on November 21st we had our 3rd meeting at Midland Library. We started off with some more introductions (We got new members!), and answered some fun questions. Micheal said his best purchase ever is his PlayStation 1 that he bought about five years ago. Ivy said that if she were an animal, she'd be a turtle because she words hard and eventually gets things done. I said that Paris Hilton is the celebrity that irritates me most, and that if I were a painter, I'd paint abstracts. Ka Chun said that if he was another nationality, he'd be Japanese, and that he doesn't know any jokes by heart. Vu said he doesn't know what he'd say if he was sleep talking, and that some of his main characteristics are being funny, outgoing, and dependable. Linda came in a bit late and missed this section.

We began "official business" by signing our time cards. Then we talked about the MTC flier and talked a bit about editing the one we have now. Then we began talking about designs for the SRP teen game board, which I'm sure you all know has a theme of "Catch the Reading Bug". Designs will be turned in next meeting. After that, we discussed the Lunar New Year celebration, and just did some basic event planning. We also voiced our opinions on possibilities for the teen lounge. (Which is changing dates this January to Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM in the large meeting room.)

So, that's pretty much everything we did last meeting! I hope all the other teen councils had good meetings!

Thanks for reading,

Katie.
